Reducing greenhouse gases

LPR’s system based on the pooling of wooden pallets contributes to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

LPR undertook a carbon footprint audit with the help of the French Environment and Energy Management Agency (ADEME) to evaluate the greenhouse gas generated by its activities across Europe (pallet production, transport, depot management, waste recycling, etc.).

Main conclusions:

  • pallet pooling emits about 50% less greenhouse gas than other pallet management systems – particularly pallet-exchange – thanks to a more rational transport system.
  • plastic pallets emit far more greenhouse gas than wooden pallets. There are two reasons for this: plastic is made from oil (a fossil resource and therefore non-renewable) and the process for producing the pallet itself consumes much more energy.
  • wood is the only material with a zero carbon footprint. A growing tree absorbs all the greenhouse gas that the wood in a pallet emits in its entire lifecycle, as long as the wood used for making the pallets comes from a sustainably-managed forest.

LPR is currently the only company in the pallet-pooling sector to have obtained PEFC certification (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification), which guarantees that pallets are made of wood from sustainably-managed forests. With certified pallets, LPR’s customers can benefit from PEFC credit transfers and optimise their own carbon footprint.
